DRONES

Custom built heavy lift hexacopter for gas leak detection
Alex is a highly motivated technology and digital media specialist majoring in electrical engineering at Virginia Tech with a minor in package design. He is also an extremely skilled drone pilot.
Recently, he has worked as a research assistant flying and building drones for the Mining Department at Virginia Tech. He works directly alongside a grad student who is pursuing his PhD by developing an autonomous drone platform for pipeline inspections and 3D reconstructions of underground mine shafts for data analysis. The video in the bottom right is a photogrammetry model of a 100ft tall stone pillar in an underground mine. He has also helped establish the Drone Racing Team at Tech becoming Vice President in 2019, and President in 2020. Alex started his drone racing career in 2017 and has participated in the National Championship at the collegiate level for three years in a row.
He has over seven years of experience in building and flying drones. Over those years he has flown many different types, including small indoor micros, racing drone, prosumer, and enterprise. The first drone he built was in 2014 and since then has built well over 50, logging hundreds of flight hours. He also has his Part 107 certification. Fueled by his passion for drones he has grown to understand the industry which enables him to build custom drones to spec for various applications, such as photogrammetry, racing, package delivery, cinematography, etc...
Alex also enjoys sharing his passion with other students and those who want to enter the industry. He has helped many prospective students gain interest in drones and develop an understanding of the technology so they can build their own projects.
